David Koma is known for his tailoring and his dramatic shapes (that have caused a media stir in the past). This season, Koma was inspired by avant-garde art, in particular the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama who is know for her repetitive patterns.
In Koma’s world, this translated into a collection of blacks, greys and nudes in an array of fabrics, namely leather. This is the first collection in which we have seen outerwear. Koma provided laser cut holes in capes alongside simply tailored yet strong coats cinched in by leather at the waist.
The footwear that accompanied each look, that of Alain Quilici, complemented the concept of the collection by featuring cut out heel wedges and curved shapes. The sculpted and flattering looks were given colour pops in the form of pompoms places across dresses, on shoulders, and even (my favourite) as the bodice of a skirt- in electric blue. These additions of colour, in a new fabric and form that is new for Koma, prove that he has a talent that is being nourished by new inspirations, and that will continue to exceed.
