gIRL series: Jess

One of my best friends for the past decade, Jess, is someone I would photograph years ago when I was just getting into the exploration of my photography – so it was very important for me to shoot her for this new series. We’ve lived in different countries for half of our friendship (both in Sydney, amazingly we managed to never overlap) and she is a still a part of my life today – for me that is true friendship: when you can be away from each other for years but still remain completely colloquial and just as close when you do see each other. Jess is creative, intelligent and captivating. I love being with her and I hope that comes through the images we shot a couple months ago in a hotel room. Below are her thoughts on beauty.

What makes you feel beautiful?

When I am really into what I am doing, whether that’s dancing or laughing or just walking with purpose. That confidence makes me feel beautiful. Obviously going on holiday, swimming in the sea and feeling the sun on my skin works wonders too!

What is beauty to you?

Beauty is an attitude. It is experienced rather than attributed- that is what makes it so great, it is everywhere for everyone at all times.

What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?

That is so hard! I feel really lucky I have seen so many truly beautiful things… When I lived in Sydney I watched the most enormous thunderstorm out at sea, it was hypnotic. I don’t think I have ever seen something so violent that is so beautiful.
