gIRL series: Katie
Katie Jane Hughes is someone I met at the very beginning of my career in beauty. I think it was about 7 years ago when Katie was the colour expert for a nail polish brand and I was a Beauty editor at a magazine. I remember her specifically because she noticed when I got my hair cut off (I used to have super long hair!) in the middle of giving a presentation at an event. I guess she’s always had an eye for detail. A random memory but somehow it stuck. It’s impossible not to get on with her and we did very well from the moment we met. We share a love of real skin and expressing our creativity.
She now lives in New York as an extremely successful makeup artist – and even though we haven’t lived in the same city for years she is still one of my favourite people in the industry. She’s open, kind and always perhaps most importantly: herself.
To me she is a true artist; full of expression and play. It is such a special gift and we are all blessed (if you don’t follow her make sure you do immediately @katiejanehughes) that she shares her knowledge with us everyday. Personally, Katie reminds me that beauty is about exploration – and hell, it’s fun! And she is just as wonderful IRL as she is through your phone.
Katie was in London recently and I couldn’t miss the chance to shoot her for gIRL. We shot the below images in her hotel room, just after she had done my makeup.
What make you feel beautiful? When I’m in my most creative zone, at home creative looks on my self. It’s a fun exploration of creativity. I’m treating my self to my time. It’s special.
What is beauty to you?Being kind over all.
What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?I’m a nervous traveler and don’t love to fly but when we’re up there and it’s calm and you look out to see the landscape or the clouds, all the different terrain that you cross. It’s amazing.
gIRL stands for Girls In Real Life and is a personal photography project of mine to capture the women in my life and talk to them about their ideas on beauty. You can see more of the series here.
